trying to breatheeeee..

Everytime the phone rings,Im hoping the person on the other end is calling to tell me,lets go,we have ur double lungs,Its like Im getting frustrated now & its not even that long, iam listed almost 4 wks but was called twice alreadyin the begginning, now I feel like its a halt.At a seminar I learned that 15% of the people who have a lung transplant due to copd most of the time because you was a smoker they go back to smoking. So getting a 2nd chance at life would be a total waste of life if a person can smoke again. I value my life to much to ever do this a 2nd time, not to mention, you have a person who dies but is willing to give you a peice of him to keep you living when he cant live on ,& your going to abuse it, I think thats very disrespectful to the donor and his/her family. We make mistakes to learn by them, after that its no a mistake anymore its pure selfishness. My new lungs will be nurtured & well taken care of & loved I will breathe threw my donor, thanx to donors life is given a 2nd chance,If anyone out there has that opportunity, take special care of it,there is no 3rd chance.I started smoking at the age of 12 yrs old, back then everyone smoked,I quit at 52 cold turkey & will never touch another SICKORETTE for as long as I live. Today,Im waiting for my call, but.. were having a shortage of donors, ohh people are dying everyday, but they are just not donors. come on guys, get out there, be a part of living and become a donor, hey, its painless for you as a donor but more painful for us & how many will take a organ if you ever needed one,Im so sure 100% of you would grab a lung ,liver heart if it was a matter of life and death,My lungs are a matter of life and death, thats why I became a donor myself, Im an organ bone, and tissue donor and i told them they can have my eyes too. so please think of how important this is and how this is a big problem for people who are dying while they are waiting for a transplant. You tho can make a big difference in a persons life.( thank you) remember you dont only need to smoke to inherit emphysema you no, copd. theres alpha-1,eneviormental,2nd hand smoke, genetic, industrial, cysytic fibrosis is another totally different disease but also in despreate need for heart and lungs, theres idiopathy, pulmonary hypertention, theres little kids that need lungs and hearts. without a donor, these people including myself will die.So just think about it then go on line and sign up.. you can be a hereo one day

As for me personally, If im not on prednosone, I cant do very much, them prednosones are my get me going pills but I have to try my best not to take them now that iam listed b/c of the tx. & after transplant ill be takin them all the time. So for instance, yesterday, fathers day.I had my sister with her family plus my family.10 of us, I made lasanga a pot of sauce, salad, it was great, but I couldnt have dont this with out my daughter to do all the hard work like grading cheese, wow takes my breath away, bending down, by the time i come up I cant move.:) so with the help of nicole, we made it and had a very nice time. By 7 pm tho I was ready for bed, lol during coffee i fought to keep my eyes open,I was getting moody, bettween trying to breathe, trying to fight being tired,& trying to be patient, I was extreamly moody, after everyone left,I took a shower at 930,went to bed, didnt wake up till 13o today. yeaa, I was tired lol. Now today is a new day,and iam still waiting,I kind of feel bad sometimes, like iam hoping someone dies, but iam reli not, but yet i find iam praying for my call to come in,b/c everyday i feel is getting harder for me. And then there are days that if I sit down, i feel great I reli want to lose this 02 tube across my face. Im excited for that too. half the time the kids say what are u doin and ill say iam all tide up right now LMAO ,But not sure if they get what I mean.. lol Im a very positive person, I go with the flow and try to always find the good in the bad, & life goes on. So hope some of you will think about you becoming donors, ask ur self if ur oragan will be any good to you after you leave this lovley world..no, but you can save a life..thanks for reading xoxox.

Wake up call..

Wake up call..

EVER RELI WANT TO DO SOMETHING BUT YOU JUST PUT IT OFF BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD,THEN YOU WAKE UP ONE DAY & RELIZE,WELL LIFE IS SHORT, BETTER DO SOME THINGS NOW OR NEVER, OKKK,Im a new yorker my whole life, always loved the city, wanted to walk the bklyn bridge, but thought I had so much time, wow time flys when your having fun!! times up.. Since i made the lung transplant list now,my goal & whats on my bucket list is to walk that brooklyn bridge🙂 & the goal is getting close.. I have been listed with unos since may 22,2012 & was called twice so far but the lungs turned out to be no good. They say the 3rd call is the charm :)) Im waiting for my charm call.lolol
Not sure why, but I put myself in this very dark place when I made the choice to smoke.I was 12 yrs old. People are well aware of copd/emphysema but I dont think many people reli feel the consequences will ever affect them personally.People always think its no big deal, only a smoke you say. when that smoke take away most of your life, Its then you wake up and smell reality!! My lungs will be available very soon & iam loking forward to walking that bridge. who wants to walk it with me ?? :)) As for smoking SICKORETTES!! Today its like playing russian roulette wih your lungs, Copd emphysema its affecting the younger crowd,No more 70-80 yr old now its more like 30-40, I was 38 the time it started 44 yrs old by the time I was copd and 53 stage 4 with end stages emphysema. So,itll get you ,its just a matter of when,Got that 1st bout with broncititis.. Thats your very 1st sign, The lungs are talking to you. When them lung talk, I suggest you listin. And remember, when you give up smoking, your urges, they pass eventually, they pass for good will come in a wave so to speak, BUT!!! you end with lung damage/lung desease, that DONT pass!! & eventually that will kill you! So, ask yourself,How important is life to you & whats more important in your life, smoking & taking a chance with your lungs or life & the people in your life.. Your in control. We have choices!! hope you malke the right choice for your life! I also would like to emphize that you dont only have to be a SMOKER to get copd, there is also ALPH-1, its gentic, you smoke & your children can get it yrs down the road, they can be born with it. There are many things that break your lungs down,& because the lungs are not repairable, you need to take special care of them, They are presious!!

The gift of life.

The gift of life.

Yepp. The gift of life is a blessing from above,So I m on a journey right now to hopefully receieve a set of lungs due to smoking SICKORETTES..The things we swore will never hurts us b/c we new it all.( NOTTT ) Im stage 4 copd with end emphysema.b/c I once new EVERYTHINGGG!! NO..Not really, but thought I did.🙂 I smoked my lungs black, now im 22% lung function, 14% walking. I wrote a blog today on my other transplant page & iam doing it here too to keep spreading awareness of copd.emphysema the danger of smoking, Im smober (lmao) 573 days woot woot I smoked 40 yrs at the age of 12, gross i no. but that was life, Today is a whole other ball game, then it was cool to smoke today tho its more cool not to smoke, Im here and will keep coming here to say how these sickorettes turn to killerettes, how the tabbacco people are getting rich off our death wish, out ignorance, whatever you want to call it, it takes life for granted and when you get to the end, well, then you wake up & smell the smoke!! Quitting smoking wasnt & is not easy but its also not that hard, If you want it bad enought its doable.I did it cold turkey, I fought it everyday for the 1st 3wks,then after that I was good to go. I have a husband with 4 kids HELLLO, I was tested a million times LMAOLMAO I didnt no anything eles but smoking , I smoked for everything & made every excuse why I couldnt quit, including iam coughing so bad b/c i need a SICKORETTE!! LMAO YEP,,That was me lolol. & now Im fighting to breath fighting to live, & I will make it! I was finally listed wedensday may 22,12 for a double or a single tx, already got my call but they wasnt a good call.. so aim waiting now, but my point is, all this for smoking, was it reli worth it!! nope.. Believe me, what dont get you now, will bite you in the tush later, lung desease does not care about your race.relgion, age, in fact its getting the younger crowd now, when i was a kid I thought you had to be 70 at least, today I no people that are in there early 30s,& already stage 1, To say the least, copd,emphysema,alpha1 none of them are cureable, Once you damage your lungs, thats it,there done. So think of it like this, which is another brain thing that helped get me threw, when an urge came or comes, i thought ,,okkk, this will pass it will pass, & it does, but when lung issues come, they dont pass, they are what reli kills you.& I have to much to live for & im sure you all do too. life is precious. lungs are precious, thats one of the names i will name my new lungs if I dont no my donors name. but they are delicate, treat them as that! never take life for granted, you never know what tommorow will bring. Im going to get a tx any min any day , it can be my last time i see my kids myy family or friend or blogs so for now ,I will enjoy life and live in the moment:) and i reli hope i reach more then one person but if i reach only one and u quit smoking, thats one more less smoker then b4 :)) so, instead of selling youself short,go for it, reach out and touch a life :)) y0u can do it!! remember.. SICKORETTES ARE KILLERS, THEY TRAVLE IN PACKS :))

awareness to copd

Iam smober 18 months & will say I enjoy not smoking more then i did smoking when i thought smoking was my life, well, it was my life, it is taking my life also, one thing i didnt relize is i was blowing myself up little by little. My lungs are so black, so deformed,so damaged, all in my own doing, I had a choice, I choose to smoke, I choose to quit, & stay that way. theres not one thing nice about smoking, maybe you think you look cool at 16 yrs old , but reli ,you dont, then it plays with us, we think we NEED the SICKORETTE.. We dont NEED them, we want them chose them over breathing,I did it 40 yrs. since the emphysema and copd got the best of me, my only option to live longer is a lung transplant, Im not reli complaining because at least theres an option for me,its eaither I do a double lung tx or die.. well this girl refuses to die, theres a whole life out there waiting for me and i intend to enjoy it. My goal is walking that brooklyn bridge, beating my 16 yr old in a game of handball as he thinks hes the handball king :)) I would luv to be free from my 02 tank ,its getting to heavy for me and its only 3 pounds !! theres so many things I can not do anymore due to smoking, heels, I cant wear them eaither, I miss my heels, but that take up to much energy.
So, as i went for new tests that just showed then how in 6 months I deteriated, they finally brought my case up again, reviewed it and called me wedensday may 16th, to tell me that as of right now I activley listed for a double lung but i =might have to share it b/c of the organ shortage, I dont mind sharing life with another human being who needs to survive as much as me, Im not greedy with it, One lung is better then no LIFE !! So Im on the list. this is a big part of this journey. this is why I started this blog, to bring you all into my life to show you what smoking can do to you, Let me just tell you, this is the hardest thing i ever had to go threw in my life, Once i was told copd emphysema end stages are cancer with out the cancer, now i see what they mean, Iam at the point now, iam weak, very tired all the time, my energy level is so low, I found out the other day at rest my lung function is 22% & with excertion its 14%, that explains the reason i can no longer walk around, 3 steps Im done. Ive had to miss partys, miss my sons football games, dancing with my daughter, God gave us one life,Its up to us to keep it healthy and enjoy what we can ,make the best of what we cant, not abuse it. So, I made the tx list, donors are needed every where, if your not a donor, Iam asking you to think about it and plez become one, If you or a loved one or someone you know is a smoker and if they ever needed a lung wouldnt it be a great feeling to know theres an option out there for them or yourself, For those who are thinking, no way, i was born with my organs Im gona die with my organs, Think how selfish that is, b/c iam sure 99% that if you needed an organ you wouldnt hesitate to take it!! think about it.ood word and quit while you can still breath. xoxox

a copd video with alot of info

Its me again, spreading the good word that we all dont care to hear when we are smokers but iam sorry guys, this copd emphema lung disease is exspandig to a younger generation, Its not 70-80 yr old anymore. Now this vidieo explains alot & also about exacerbations which is what iv been in the hospital for the last 3 times in 10 months.Im stage 4 with end stagrs emphysema, I smoked 40 yrs since i was 12, Oh I know, gross lol but hey, it is what it is,So, I quit cold turkey 18 months ago.Im no sorry one bit,Im sorry tho i abused my lungs for as long as I did. Lungs do not get to regenerate the way a liver would, most people are surprised with that, even I was too. but the tuth is ,once you damage your lungs, you damaged them for life. Our lungs depend on us,on you to make your life last longer and healthier,Im waitng to be on an acive tranplant list.If i can go back in time ,well thats what i say, i sometimes wonder what i would reli change, I reli think smoking would be on of them knowing what I know now. Well, whatever it takes, Im willing to help anyone whos interested in quitting guiding you to a beter way ,guiding eachother as well, whats that saying, more heads are better then one LMAO🙂 FOR A MOTHER OF4(,ME) AT MY AGE, I RELI SHOULD BE MORE ACTIVE AND DIFFENTLY NOT HOOKED UP TO A TANK.I should be runnig the ball park with my son, dancing in the rain, but Iam limited ..for now,🙂 once i get my shiny new lungs ,watch out, Im walking the brooklyn bridge :)) thats my goal. So think , If the disease showed up where its noticable, would you still smoke??? Think about it. hve a good day ,ill be around, iam going to the gym :)) have to keep my body strong. Do you know you need strong legs to have strong lungs, who new ?? lol 02 & all here I go .:))

chair excersie

well, I hope the video comes out🙂 I have been reli sick,Due to copd, thats one reason I havent been here, couldnt get it together to get a clear enough head to write ,so i felt stuck. Yesterday my phyisical therapist was here, we used weights, 5 pound ankle weights 2 pound hand weights.I did good with them, I havenbt been to the gym in months, My copd has me down to the ground, Iam now on a bipap machine to breath,o0n top of 02, there are many days latly i feel like iam wasting away, then yesterday after i excesied, did the weights, i actually felt better then b4, So today, me my lil guy & his friend went to the gym, Im the kind of person that refuses to stay down to long, and i thought it out, All the other times I push myself beyond the limit, I think that hurt me more then help me, This time I only did what my body allowed. Nomore.no less. After the gym, I stopped at moes sports, I picked up ankle weight 1/2 pounds to 10, one problem tho, I have to legs,2 ankles so i thought with a pair of ankels we get a pair of weights lmao $40.00 later got home and only have one weight for one ankle.. now tommorow I will ring them back, What am I going to do wih just one🙂 I also used 2 pound weights since last yr,Im upgrading to 3 pounds now. Did you know that in oreder to have strong lungs we need strong legs. My legs are very week, Time to shit or get off the pot as they say LMAO.. I have to build up.. staying fit with benifit out heart, lungs muscles & make us stronger. its great for anxiety too. so i posted this video, hope it comes out. for anyone out there, try to give up the smoking.. I found it to be the worst habit for yourself. It reli sucks the life out of you. I have to relize with my trasplant theres no turnng back, & I have to make this work for me as long as i can, Its a fight,a challange, but I gota do it.I been looking for pulmo rehab, cant seem to find one my way, I eaither have to go to bklyn or the city. so till I see my transplant drs may 8th, ILL be doing my own reahb at the gym ;00 may 2 nd i go for ssd.. then may 8th i go for tests and hopefully i can be on the active transplant list. My friends, enjoy the video, hope it works for you & hope a few will actually even think about how self distructing a sickorette can be to ur health & or the people you are around. think about it..& remember urges craviing, they all go away, lung cancer copd emphysema, you suffer then you die as there is no cure, so weigh it out.. live a good healthy productive life. your lungs depend on you!!! xoxoxo

Ever hear the saying ,we have all the time in the world??

What happens to time, It slips right on by,Just when we think we have all the time in the world, now we relize, time is slipping away right in front of us.We always say theres 24 hrs in a day but thats never enough hrs in a day. When it come down to life, theres never enough time for life, We always seem to need more.
Im copdstage 4 with end stages emphysema, I was hospitalized twice in 6 wks & Im no where near gettin any better, Infact, I feel like iam declining very fast, then Im hoping its just the weather and not my time, I been feeling very sick to my stomach latly, coughing, so so tired, My body hurts, even my bones. Tonight iam coughing but I couldnt get my breath, my poor husband got reli scared, hitting my back to get the mucus to move some, it did help, plus drank a bottle of water. And Iam also on bipap now too, its soppose to help prevent me from being vented, help me breath,so iam not doin all the work, but im not sure its working,I have an appt for testing in a few wks, they will determine if im ready for the list for lung transplant. well, positive attitude brings postives things🙂 Im trying to keep my spirit high, & trying to make the best of it, I just despies being sick,Its a scary feeling when you can breath, & all this for smoking SICKORETEES!!! I relize now, it was like committing suiside, We put the nails in our own coffins & made the tabbaco companys very rich people. All tho I dont agree with smoking anymore because Iam dying from it,That was a choice that I made, It ws my resposibilitie to say NOPE!! So,nobody to blame but myself. I wasnt educated about the danger of tabacco. But Iam now🙂 Alittle to late for me,But not to late for you new smokers out there, or smokers that are still healthy who can still breath.. Take a straw & breath say 10 times threw the straw in & out, 1/2 a breath tho, theres a catch to everything🙂 well thats how a copder breaths, and it dont care how old you are.So if theres a chance for you, grab it & run to freedom. you will be happy healthy and alive!! If your already short of breath, seek a pulmo dr and you can still have time, Dont let time slip right by you like i did. Your lungs depend on you. Hope your choice is a wise one!! Enjoy the time you have!!life is short. b4 you no it, Time is up..

COPD COMPLICATIONS!!

Though lung damage from COPD can’t be reversed, quitting smoking and reducing your exposure to secondhand smoke and environmental and occupational pollutants can help you postpone or reduce the possibility of these complications:

Acute Exacerbations

This is a sudden acceleration of COPD symptoms most often caused by infections, pollution, or change in temperature. Coughing and mucus production increases, and wheezing and shortness of breath may intensify or become more noticeable. Exacerbations may happen only a few times per year, and they often resolve readily with medication. Their occurrence may increase as the diseases progresses. If exacerbations are extreme, respiratory failure can occur.

Heart Attack or Stroke

Studies have shown that worsening of COPD can lead to increased risk for heart attacks and ischemic strokes (blockage of blood to the brain), and the risk increases after a COPD exacerbation. Other related complications include right-sided heart failure, or cor pulmonale (heart swelling and heart failure due to chronic lung disease).

Respiratory Infections

Those with COPD are more likely to get frequent colds, the flu, or pneumonia, which results in even more difficulty breathing and further irreversible lung damage.

High Blood Pressure

COPD may cause high blood pressure (hypertension) in the arteries that bring blood to your lungs (pulmonary hypertension).

Lung Cancer

Smokers who don’t have chronic bronchitis are at a lower risk of developing lung cancer than those smokers who do.

Pneumonia

This can be caused by bacterial infections, which can possibly lead to respiratory failure. Streptococcal pneumonia is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia in patients with COPD.

Pneumothorax

Structural damage caused by COPD can lead to a collapsed lung, allowing air to leak into the chest cavity. Learn more about pneumothorax.

Depression

The emotional effects of living with COPD can also be challenging, because of diminished ability to be active and do things you enjoy. Coping with a progressive, incurable disease can lead to depression, and breathing problems can also create significant anxiety.

Other complications include irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), need for breathing machine and oxygen therapy, severe weight loss and malnutrition, and sleep problems.

My Dr. appointment

YESTERDAY I Went tosee my pulmo Dr, N.Y.U. In manhattan.
After listing to me breath, checking my vitals, Shes alitle concerned
but my wheezing was not as bad as I thought it would be. It can all be
due to allergy (pollen) that is making my exacerbation harder to get over.
Im no longer on prednosone, we all know how much most lungs love their prednosones🙂
& mine just happen to be In love lolol. Amazing how iam off them since Friday & how badly
my lungs are behaving the past few days.I have a script in case i really need to go back on them
& an emergency script forlvaquin(antibiotics) In case. I just hadso much medicine the past month
that given to much for a long period of time will not work then when Ineed it the most.
Going over my charts, she dont want me back in the hospital,& feels ill do better with a bi-pap machine
at home. Im alil leary with this but hey, anything to make me feel better till i get shiney new lungs🙂
& who knows when that will beSo tomm morning the machine will be here, ohh lucky me🙂 I really mean that
with no sarcastism, Im not interbated,Iam alive & breathing, yess iam lucky compared to some.
Today the visting nurse came, I get one more visit with them, she said its not alarming but she hears alil
fluid down in my lungs. well, ill just stay on top of things. Well, I think Iam goin to do alil excersie ,sitting down of corse lol. Next appt is may 8th with new york columbia pressbytarian, cardio pulmo stress test, pft & 6 min walk
hope I can do them. ( positive thinking) I will make them all ! :))

Internet Friends !!

Internet Friends !!

I really believe that more people need to take copd/emphysema more seriously!! I know people who this copd is no big deal, Life is a big deal to me and should be to you also,Copd is a related smokers disease, but its also gentic,alpha-1 . more people are dying from this disease,If you catch this early on,because you all know by now there is no cure for copd or emphysema.. but you can slow down the progression. But I have to say, when you hit stage 4 , well you just opened a whole new chapter in your copd life, stage 4 my friends is a whole new world.Sadly to say most of you will smoke till your lungs wont allow you to.B/c everyone thinks itll not happen to me,or iam ok ,i can breath, I dont have any issues with my lungs, that to me is plain dumb but also thats an aaddicted person who now needs help but is to stuborn to reach out & in denial. Little do they know, thats the best time to quit is when there is no breathing problems or lung issues…Copd is the complicated disease, Here today and can be gone tomm.
Did you no that anxiety is brought on by dicomfort when you having troble breathing, If you learn to breath properly, It can be highly benifical to you, 2nd hand smoke contains more then 50 cancer causing chemical compands, Something like 7000 chemicals in the actual SICKORETTE!!
There is close to 5 million deaths in the U.S.annualy
And still, yet these kids knowing all this information will still smoke, it was estimated close to 3000 kids will smoke between the ages of 13 7 15.. thats akot of kids . I wonder, will it ever be a smoke free world?? R.I.P. Laura. now you can breath easy, luv and will miss you.xoxo

Whats It going to take….?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Campaign intended to educate Americans about the smoking habit’s dangers
CDC says Big Tobacco spends more than $27 million per day in marketing
Ex-smokers profiled include amputee, heart patient

Washington (CNN) — Federal health officials on Thursday are unveiling a $54 million national media campaign to get smokers to quit and prevent anyone else, especially children, from starting.

The campaign, called “Tips From Former Smokers,” is intended to educate Americans about the dangers of smoking through the stories and graphic pictures of ex-smokers who have suffered severe health consequences of tobacco use.

The former smokers profiled have suffered ailments such as stroke-related paralysis, limb amputation, lung removal and heart attack. One breathes through a stoma, a surgically created hole in the neck through which a person who has undergone larynx or voice box surgery can breathe.

“Hundreds of thousands of lives are lost each year due to smoking, and for every person who dies, 20 more Americans live with an illness caused by smoking,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.

“We cannot afford to continue watching the human and economic toll from tobacco rob our communities of parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends and co-workers. We are committed to doing everything we can to help smokers quit and prevent young people from starting in the first place.”

The ads are the brainchild of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health. The agency says smoking remains the country’s leading cause of disease and preventable death, resulting in more than 443,000 fatalities annually. More than 8 million Americans live with a smoking-related illness or conditions, according to the disease agency.

Youth smoking and new report

The combination of public service announcements and paid advertising for television, radio, newspapers and magazines also spotlights the dangers of exposure to secondhand smoke. The ads will also be featured on billboards, in theaters and online — including on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“Although they may be tough to watch, the ads show real people living with real, painful consequences from smoking,” said CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden. “There is sound evidence that supports the use of these types of hard-hitting images and messages to encourage smokers to quit, to keep children from ever beginning to smoke, and to drastically reduce the harm caused by tobacco.”

The campaign includes eight television ads (one of them in Spanish), seven radio spots in 30- and 60-second versions, seven print ads and five billboard and bus stop ads.

The campaign marks the first time the CDC has run a paid, comprehensive national anti-tobacco advertising effort. The primary target is smokers ages 18 to 54, but public health experts also said they hope it will dissuade children from adopting the habit.

While we are not prepared to comment … discouraging smoking initiation and promoting quitting remain important.
Philip Morris USA

Last week the surgeon general released a report on youth smoking, leading Sebelius to declare: “Targeted marketing encourages more young people to take up this deadly addiction every day. This administration is committed to doing everything we can to prevent our children from using tobacco.”

The agency said, “Targeted messages and images that portray smoking as an acceptable, appealing activity for young people are widespread, and advertising for tobacco products is prominent in retail stores and online.”

The need for such a campaign is urgent, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

“This media campaign is a smart investment that will reduce tobacco use, save lives and reduce tobacco-related health care costs,” Matthew L. Myers, president of the advocacy group. “The tobacco industry spends more than $1 million every hour on marketing that entices kids, discourages smokers from quitting and portrays its deadly and addictive products as normal and appealing. The CDC’s campaign will counter the industry’s marketing with the harsh truth about tobacco use, told by former smokers themselves.”

The CDC said the tobacco industry spends more than $27 million a day on marketing to kids and others — about $10 billion a year. In two days, the industry spends about what the government has budgeted for the entire 12-week campaign. The industry denies that it markets to children.

Tobacco giant Phillip Morris would not comment of the campaign, telling CNN: “Philip Morris USA agrees smoking is addictive and causes serious disease. While we are not prepared to comment on CDC’s anti-smoking campaign, preventing underage tobacco use, discouraging smoking initiation and promoting quitting remain important to reducing the harm from cigarette smoking. A complementary strategy, focused on the development of and appropriate communications about potentially lower risk tobacco products, may be one of the most meaningful actions that the Food and Drug Administration can take to reduce the health effects of smoking.”

Not in dispute is the deadly impact smoking can have on health. About a third of the smoking-related deaths in the United States are linked to heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

The ads highlight a shocking but very realistic fate.
Nancy Brown, American Heart Association

“The ads highlight a shocking but very realistic fate that could await some current smokers if they continue their tobacco addiction,” said Nancy Brown, the association’s CEO. The ads note that smoking contributes to one in five strokes and increase the odds of having a heart attack. “The American Heart Association believes these graphic ads, coupled with vigorous tobacco control at the state level, will reach not only the adults who smoke, but also will break through to teens and discourage them from ever taking up this deadly habit,” she said.

The American Cancer Society says nine of 10 smokers started before they turned 18.

“Combating tobacco use requires a multipronged approach, including federal regulation of tobacco products, increased tobacco taxes, smoke-free workplaces and sustained investment in prevention and cessation now and beyond the end of the CDC campaign,” said Christopher W. Hansen, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, in a statement. “This historic advertising campaign will help to combat Big Tobacco’s unscrupulous efforts to addict new users and prevent existing users from trying to quit.”

Featured reader comments: Should smokers be targeted?

The campaign begins less than a month after a federal mandate requiring tobacco companies to place graphic images on their products warning of the dangers of smoking was tossed out by a judge in Washington, who said the requirements were a violation of free speech.

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act passed in 2009 would have required nine written warnings such as “Cigarettes are addictive” and “Tobacco smoke causes harm to children.” Also included would have been alternating images of a corpse and smoke-infected lungs.

CNN’s Caleb Hellerman contributed to this report.

The complicated disease!

My throat is dry.
I start to cough.
chest is tight.
i start to cry.
Iam diggin deep for air.
In & out,up & down chest is cold
here comes the fear.
I feel my heart beating fast,
The panic,the sweat,
I feel like this breath will be my last’
I fight like hell, but I remain calm
when really i want to screem and yell.
my body feels very tense, muscles ache
head is pounding, now its all making sense.
I try to walk but I go so far, I stop,to breath
wishin i can talk,
I look in the mirror, I see the lines run across my face.
